Taking the traditional Japanese styles of Ukiyo-e and Yamato-e, using a stunning panoramic bird's eye perspective, and then infusing the work with satirical and dreamlike themes executed with a mind-blowing level of intricate detail, Akira Yamaguchi brilliantly balances Asian art history with contemporary eastern and western influences. He is one of the more prominent members of a small group related solely by the blending of high and low themes with a prodigious technical artistic skill, including Aida Makoto, Matsui Fuyuko, Manabu Ikeda and Kumi Macheda. The sheer inventiveness and imagination on display is something I wish there was more of in contemporary art. Yamaguchi's unpretentious approach is accessible without discouraging academic interpretation. He moves from watercolors to oils, from a realistic, post-modern style to an approximation of the late edo-period Ukiyo-e work of Hiroshige, with a graceful ease. I haven't been this blown away by a monograph since Walton Ford's 'Pancha Tantra', Vincent Desiderio's 'Paintings 1975-2010', or Glenn Brown's 'Three Exhibitions'. This beautifully produced book is large by Japanese standards, at 9 x 12 inches, and features numerous gatefolds to fully appreciate the nearly microscopic level of detail. Every book published by Seigensha I've bought has been constructed using the highest quality materials available; they excel at creating softcover monographs that are just as 'deluxe' as hardcovers.
This book has a large number of pictures of this great Japanese contemporary artist. The size and quality of the reproductions are quite good.
