A light weight writer, Mr. McGee, besides that it is time for him to write a classic novel; in an effort to write this novel he needed to find a place for perfect solitude. That place turns out to be an inn that was closed for the winter high up on Baldpate Mountain. Little did he know that there were seven Keys to Baldpate Inn. With each key can a person or persons with unique characteristics and a good reason for being there. If you can believe who they are and their reasons. Mr. McGee suspects them all of being some part of a convoluted plot which nobody will let him in on.
We go along for the ride. There is no use speculating. And Mr. McKee's chivalry may be his undoing. Be sure to read the book to the last sentence.
I came to this book after watching the 1935 version of Seven Keys to Baldpate with Walter Brennan as the station master. I have still to see the play however the movie was more based on the play than the book. Some of the statements were directly out of the book but many others had that Cohan feel.

I really enjoyed Seven Keys To Baldpate, an old-time mystery by Earl Derr Biggers, whose more famous books star world-renowned super-sleuth Charlie Chan.In my mind, Seven Keys To Baldpate is more like watching a movie than reading a book, due to its fast paced, seemingly real-time movement and dialogue. The story's wintry setting of a deserted mountaintop summer resort called "Baldpate" is vividly painted, and its many characters - seven of whom appear at Baldpate's door with one of the titled "seven keys," in hopes of outwitting their fellows and absconding with the large sum of mysterious money to which they all lay some form of claim - prove interesting and likable, even the "bad guys."
All of the supposedly-closed resort's visitors are lying about who they are and why they have come to Baldpate; save for one, our hero, romance author William Magee, who arrives at the mountaintop first, with the idea of finding solitude enough to conjure the words for his first great novel, but who instead finds himself in the middle of a perplexing, dangerous battle of wits, besieged by one uninvited guest after another.
Everything is revealed, to Mr. Magee and to us, about three-quarters through; and all along the way, the "mystery" keeps us very much intrigued, while conversations between the cast of characters remain clever, funny, and brisk. And that's what I enjoyed most about this book - the witty repartee.

The seven keys to Baldpate is an old style mystery. Basically people show up at a closed for the season inn and things begin to get complicated. It has some twists and turns that are unexpected and the ending is great! I totally enjoyed the book.
This is enjoyable, but you have to keep the time in which it was written in mind.
1913. Society was very different.
I love how people keep turning up with progressively stranger and more outlandish stories, and the narrator is trying to figure it all out. (Poor guy, he just wanted a vacation.) It's madcap and rompish and fun - and worth a read.
We purchased this book because my husband and son were journeying out west. They actually stayed at the Baldpate Inn which they said was delightful. The book is a little boring but nice. If you get a change to go out west try to spend a night here...it is beautiful!
I have wanted to read this book ever since I saw the movie, "House of the Long Shadows" (which is based on the book). Surprisingly the book is nothing like the movie (or should that be the other way 'round?) It is a charming tale that keeps you guessing, and is an intriguing, historical look at how people spoke and acted in the early 1900s.
If you haven't seen the movie, it is worth a look. It stars four actors from the early horror genre Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, and John Carradine. It also stars Desi Arnaz, Jr. It's a funny, creepy-old-house movie with some knuckle-biting scenes. It is set in Wales, so the name of the manor house is changed from "Baldpate" to "Bllyddrpaetwr" or some such spelling!
I really enjoyed reading this book - just be prepared to overlook all the typos.
A writer seeking solitude in a closed inn finds more and more people intruding upon that solitude. The mystery in this book is, who are all these people and why are they here? When all is revealed, the plot line wouldn't hold up by today's standards. The "secret" (it seems that everybody knew about it) deal that was carried out could just as easily have been done in any office and with a lot less logistical planning. But then, we wouldn't have a mystery novel.
The book does keep the reader's interest as the mystery seems to get more and more involved. One has to get used to the old style of writing. At the time that the book was written, it seems that people would believe that a man could meet a girl with golden curls and blue eyes, instantly fall in love and propose marriage the next day. Or perhaps they liked to think that things could happen that way.
This book is a kick. I'm on the lookout for a paper copy to have as a keepsake on the bookshelf, just for the novelty and antiquity of the prose. It's a fun little mystery and easy read, I enjoyed it, but what's really engrossing to me is seeing the way women are portrayed in it. Those evil suffragettes, making the devil's trouble for men at every turn! Or an older, fat and ugly woman described as looking, "Like she wanted to vote." I mean it's surreal, reading it today as a woman who has always been able to vote. Heck, my mother and grandmother were always able to vote.
I'm totally getting a copy and making my daughters read it, just so they know this was a real thing, that women were really viewed this way a hundred years ago.
Otherwise it honestly is a fun, shortish, lightweight mystery. I'd recommend it.
Having read Derr Biggers' Chan novels and recently viewing a trio of films based on the title (but more on George M. Cohan's stage play) I wanted to see how the novel compared. Other than charcter names and title this story's plot differs totally from the movies. I'm glad that it did. Like his Chan books Derr Biggers created a fun mystery with a bit of adventure and an old fashioned tale of love. Some will find it a bit corny but I liked it.
