I'm a beginner in Russian, but I've been a beginner for quite a while now.

This dictionary is easy to use - sometimes I just read parts of it for fun, to try to expand my vocabulary. It has accent marks - a big help for beginners. I also like that it does not combine related words into a huge, single entry: it keeps separate words separate. It annotates entries' Genitive case, perfective/imperfective and plurals. It has multiple translations for many words, and often has exemplary phrases to show the different connotations. At the beginning are some rules and patterns for declensions and conjugations. At the end is a glossary of many proper nouns.

One cool thing I like to do with this dictionary is look up new words I learn, in order to find other words with the same root or stem: this helps reinforce learning the original word, and also learn some additional, related words.

On the con side: it is 'only' about 1000 pages, so it doesn't have every word in it (karma, saute), but you can try Google Translate for those (not that Google Translate is so great). It doesn't have a history of language changes from 1917.

English russian dictionary edition by Mohamed Chami Reference eBooks Reviews

Excellent product. You can look up words in English in the first section and words in Russian in the second section. Functional useful. It's a dictionary. Very helpful in my Russian studies.
When I went through the Russian course at the Army's Defense Language Institute, this was the dictionary I was given. It served me very well in my service as a Marine linguist, and since. After 6 years of military service, and then finding it's way into my college backpack, being constantly flipped through and consulted, I finally needed a new copy, 11 years after it was issued to me.

I have many Russian dictionaries in my library. This is time and again the only one that gets any use. I have found the entries to be very accurate and the translations both to and from Russian to be very appropriate. I have used this for everything from scholarly translations, to casual correspondence with Russian penpals, to freelance work translating instructions for construction machinery; it has never failed me.
Fantastic Russian-English and English-Russian dictionary. As a Russian translator, this is my BEST and most used Russian dictionary. This book is an absolute MUST for anyone studying the Russian language!

Although tracking says delivery was attempted but failed it was handed to me on time. Someone pushed the wrong button. I am 78 yo and want to keep my brain busy.. For some reason the Russian language fascinates me so I want to learn a little bit about how it works and maybe learn a few words and phrases, this dictionary should help.
I used this when I lived in Saint Petersburg while staying with a Russian host family. This was one of the only ways that we could communicate! In fact, we just kept it on the kitchen table so that we could look up anything we needed to.
The dictionary is pretty huge and inclusive. You can find pretty much any word you're looking for. If you are new to the language, I would recommend getting sticky note tabs to mark where each new letter starts, otherwise you'll spend a lot of time flipping.
I only wish that it was a little bit smaller so I could carry it around, but you can find phrase books for that.
Were I working on modern Russian, this dictionary would certainly meet my needs. As it happens, I am working on 19th century hand-written Polish civil records which were recorded in Russian from about 1867 until 1918. Some of the obscure 19th century professions just don't make it into this 21st century dictionary and over 150 years, meanings, spellings and uses of words change. This is not the fault of the dictionary. The author made a huge and largely successful effort to render modern American English into modern Russian. He carefully and clearly differentiates between different meanings of the same word. For anyone working between these two modern languages, this dictionary would be an excellent choice.
